In 2001, the Coalition began a second family
literacy program, Village Readers, in a section of Delray Beach in which 32
percent of the adults function at the lowest level of literacy. This program
provided instruction to 76 adults and 60 children in 2004-2005. In 2003, the
Coalition began training staff in after school programs on literacy strategies
as part of the After School Reads program. This program trained 120 staff
members that impacted 2,000 children in 2004-2005.
In 2004, the Coalition initiated three new programs: a Health Literacy program to train staff at 12 medical sites on conveying health information to people with low literacy levels and limited English proficiency; an Early Reading First program, in partnership with the Hispanic Human Resources Council, to provide training and assistance to literacy coaches and teachers in 28 classrooms that serve 250 bilingual children; and an Adult Learner Leadership (ALL) Board to provide adult learners with the opportunity to share their ideas and experiences with learners from other programs. The ALL Board helps learners develop leadership skills and serves as a focus group for literacy providers.
