Hey! I’m from Minneapolis and I graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2006 with a degree in journalism. After that, I worked at a TV station in the Sioux City, Iowa area. But I wanted a change, so I joined up with the AmeriCorps team as an ESOL teacher in Belle Glade, FL. My students are immigrants from Latin America and Haiti. I studied in Mexico for a semester and experienced the frustrations of trying to get by with minimal knowledge of a foreign language, so I feel like I somewhat understand the difficulties my students are trying to overcome. They are so motivated to learn English, their dedication is really inspiring. It makes me love my new job here in Florida. And the winters without snow are definitely a perk too! I care deeply about immigrants’ rights and after my service, I hope to start a career that allows me to help immigrants adjust to life and realize their own American dream here in the U.S.
