The Village Readers Family Literacy Program at Village Academy
gives 76 adults and 60 children living in the poorest neighborhoods in Delray
Beach the opportunity to work toward achieving a better life. The majority
of the families are recent immigrants from Haiti. The adults who attend class
in the evening, after working at low paying jobs during the day, develop literacy
skills to prepare them for further education and/or enhanced employment possibilities.
The children receive individualized instruction and participate in reading
enrichment activities. Eighty-eight percent of the adult students who were
tested this year improved their English language or other literacy skills.
Ninety-four percent of the children demonstrated an improvement in their language
and literacy skills.
