WORKPLACE AND
COMMUNITY EDUCATION
The Coalitions Workplace Literacy Program
provides:
On the job customized instruction for employees who need help improving their English language skills, basic reading skills orobtaining a GED
Customized curriculum tailored to meet the needs of the employers while utilizing manuals and forms used on the job
Trained instructors, program coordination and
materials
An initial assessment is administered to determine the employer needs and
the skill level of the employees. Classes are taught on-site and usually meet
once or twice a week for a total of 2-3 hours.
The program is actively marketed through community organizations, business
associations and word of mouth referral. The Coalition collaborates with the
School District, Workforce Alliance and the Business Development Board.
The program has affected employees in many different ways. One student who had low reading skills was going to be laid off because he could not pass the test to obtain his Commercial Driver’s License. After attending class for several months to improve his reading skills, he was able to pass the test, obtain his CDL license and keep his job.
Employers who partner with the Palm Beach County Literacy Coalition for this
invaluable program gain a more productive workforce, a safer work environment
and employees who have increased communication skills with their supervisors.
Employees receive greater self esteem, improved morale and the ability to
advance in their jobs.
