Not everybody is completely encouraged that shifting mental healthcare online is the way forward. “For me, what works in therapy is when you satisfy someone face-to-face, in the exact same room,” says London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You get to know not just what it’s like to talk with the individual, but how it feels to be in a room with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘good enough’, but it doesn’t create the nearness, the intimacy, that actually gets people to open up and explore things.”
” I’ve carried out some research into Skype counselling,” states London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘practical equivalent’ of conventional counselling; it’s simply not quite the exact same thing. It’s truly crucial that individuals who take part in it are aware that it’s a different experience from being in the room with somebody, speaking face-to-face.”
” In terms of ease of access, it’s a good start and definitely better than absolutely nothing. It’ll ideally lead them to eventually revealing up in the room.
In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some clients towards online programmes rather than face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.
” My worry is that it’s occurring increasingly more for economic factors, instead of since it’s what’s best for individuals. If it’s presented just to save money and there aren’t critical questions being asked about these services, that’s bad. Then, I’m always very sceptical of people who are either extremely very professional or extremely really against online psychological health care. It’s a case of asking the right concerns.”
I signed up for four really different online mental health services– ranging in expense from complimentary to , 100 a month– and ran my anxieties through them all, all at once, for a week. Here’s what I discovered.

What I’m doing here is reviewing my experience of using each psychological health service, instead of its efficiency – since even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘treat’ you in simply one week. I’m simply comparing each service to the experience of sitting in a space and blarting on about yourself to a therapist. If you’re with me, nod. Okay, cool – let’s psychological health!
How does it work?
As seen on FB (by me, anyhow), United States business is the business leviathan of the e-counselling game. They claim to have 500 certified counsellors working for them, each with at least 3 years of experience.
After filling in a survey to determine what particular flavour of mental you are, you’re coupled with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly swap for a various one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then kick off an instant messaged treatment session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, go on and on till one of you eventually passed away.
What does it cost?
You get a free seven-day trial – much like a complimentary Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, except with way more questions about what your childhood was like. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for limitless message-based counselling and one ‘free’ phone session with your counsellor monthly. Yeah, I do not get how it’s complimentary either, however whatever.
How much is BetterHelp monthly?
Filtering that through instant messaging might be handy if you find the idea of baring your soul to a complete stranger a bit awks. You will not get the exact same connection just like in person counselling, but the semi-anonymity might make it simpler to open if you’ve been drinking two bottles of rum and dancing around in your dead nan’s bridal gown every night.
She first ascertained the scale of my stress and anxiety, what activates it– social circumstances, fulfilling individuals for the first time– and then dived headlong into my fractious childhood (divorced parents, strained familial relationships, bullied in junior school). She was pretty nosey tbh, but then that’s her task, isn’t it?
Overall, the service is remarkably slick. The conversation can be a little stop-starty at times, but it was in fact a far smoother and more on-tap experience than I expected. I even got speedy actions to messages over the weekend, which was unforeseen.
Talkspace vs Betterhelp
The truth you can edit messages prior to sending them indicates you’re unlikely to blurt out something revealing and unguarded in the heat of the minute. So profound moments of realisation may be hard to come by if you can’t get a relaxed flow going.
Who do I think it might it benefit?
Anybody with a low-end psychological health problem who’s cool with getting counselled in an extremely internet-y, 2016-y way. If you’re living under the blackest, bleakest cloud possible and need major attention (and perhaps some meds), most likely isn’t for you Better Help Counselr See My Picture
